This year threatens to set a record for the most tornadoes. Most everyone I've met has stories about close brushes with powerful storms - tornadoes, hurricanes, straight-line winds etc. So now is the time to share.
1. What'd you think of the movie Twister?
I never saw it. The reason I never saw it is that a large part of the storm scenes were filmed just a couple of miles from where I lived in Oklahoma. I saw how they did the effects and knew a bunch of people who worked as extras on the movie. My philosophy at the time was that if I wanted to see a bunch of dumb rednecks running to or from a storm I could just look out my door any day during the Spring.
2. What's the closest you've been to death by storm?
When I was seven we were visiting my Grandma and Grandpa in the small town of Anamoose, ND. A tornado warning came in the middle of the night and my parents woke me up and marshaled my sister and I to the basement with the rest of the family. I didn't really know what all the excitement was about and I just wanted to go back to bed. My uncle Donnie had a room in the basement that he used when he was home from his job with the railroad. He wasn't home that night, so I crawled into his bed and went to sleep. The next morning I went outside to find all the adults clearing debris from the yard and house. The tornado had ripped out a massive oak tree that used to be in the front yard as well and ripping out part of the sunporch, which happened to be right over the bedroom where I had slept peacefully right through the storm's fury. Fun times.
3. Have you ever seen a tornado.
